Music and Movement

For the young child, my classes provide a learning environment that addresses the children's basic developmental needs: movement, exploration, sensory-motor experience, language, and interesting activities that invite the children's involvement. Children are encouraged to use their imagination and to be creative. As listening skills are enhanced, children develop a deeper level of appreciation towards music.

Piano Lesson

Available both online and in-person

For my piano students, our lessons revolve around active listening, developing music literacy and technique while fostering a deep love and appreciation towards music. I will work with each student and parents to provide support in effective practicing at home.

Piano lessons are conducted at Esch Music Academy at 5 McIntosh Drive, Markham, Ontario and at my home studio at 2628 McCowan Road, Scarborough

I am Susan Chang, piano teacher, early childhood music and movement educator, zero-waste lifestyle enthusiast, nature lover, wife and mother of two sons.

Music and education have always been my passion, and I am most fortunate to be working with children and parents, teaching music and movement and piano lessons to expecting mothers, babies and children of all ages, teens and young adults throughout my career the last twenty more years.

Fostering in my students a deep love for music and the work ethic of making persistent effort to achieve their goals, is the main focus of my work. I have high hopes for each student, and I cater to every person's uniqueness with individualized curriculum that meets their specific style of learning while challenging them to become better learners, musicians and humans.

I hold an Associate Diploma in Piano Performance from the London College of Music, BA (Honours) in Children's Studies and Master of Education from York University. I also did more than a year's study in Early Childhood Education at Southern Queensland University and received training and certification from Musikgarten.

While keeping abreast with the latest developments in music education and happenings in the world of children and young adults, I am continuing to expand my repertoire and develop skills and knowledge as a musician and educator.

Studio Policies

Class Schedule and Attendance

Students are expected to attend their weekly classes as scheduled, and should avoid missing any class except for severe illness. Please informed me at the earliest possible if you would be missing a class. There will be no make up for missing a class without prior notice.

Classes are both available online and in-person. Classes may be switched to online mode during severe weather condition.

Please be punctual for your class, lesson will not be lengthened if a student is late.

Please do not arrive more than 5 minutes earlier than your class time and be prompt in pick up after class.


Practice

Students are expected to practice at the least 5 days in a week to ensure progress.

For school going students, parents are required to create home environments that are conducive for practice, allocating a time during the day when children are alert with no competing activities and distracting noise in the background.

High school and adult students are responsible to work out a schedule and carry out the required practice in a consistent manner.

Parents who face challenges in supporting their children in daily practices please consult with me so that we can work out a practice plan as soon as possible.

Media Waiver

I would like to request for you to sign a media waiver to allow me to post images and videos on social media, on this website and /or affiliates. No names and other personal informations will be revealed.

Fee Payment

Tuition and material fee are paid in full for the whole semester for Musikgarten classes before a stipulated due date and usually two weeks before the first class.

Private piano lesson's tuition is due on the first day of the month. Lessons are booked for the entire school year from Sept to June and for summer, if students choose not to attend class, fee will not be deferred to the following month and there will be no refund. To withdraw from my program, please give me one month's notice.

Students can pay monthly fee, three months in advance or for the whole school year from September till June or for the entire summer classes.

I accept cash, e-transfer and cheque.

Media Waiver

I grant permission to Music and Movement with Susan and Susan Cheam Chang to use my image (photographs and /or video) for use in their/ her publications including videos, emails, newsletters, social medias, websites and/ or affiliates and general publications.
I hereby waive any right to inspect or approve the finished photographs or electronic matters that may be used now or in the future, whether that use is known to me or unknown, and I waive any right to royalties and other compensation, arising from or related to the use of the image.
